Joe Bray Passes away

A dark cloud descended over Westmeath Pitch and Putt on Sunday evening, 10th January 2010, as the news spread that Collinstown's Joe Bray had passed away. Joe was known the length and breadth of the country, as a Pitch and Putt man through and through. It was his jovial character and bubbly personality that will be remembered most though as well as his never-ending enthusiasm for the game.

Joe joined the game of Pitch and Putt in 1978 when he became a member of Collinstown. His impact on the club was immense over the years as he poured his heart and soul into the club. His work both on the committee and on the course will never be forgotten and was fittingly recognized last year when the club unveiled 'Joe Bray's Seat' - a seat that will occupy a suitable place on the course for many years to come.

Joe also played a big part in Pitch and Putt at a county level too throughout the years. He was chairman of the county board in the mid-nineties and went on to successfully manage the county team for a number of years after that. His passion for the game was second to none and he covered more ground than anyone on Inter-County day. His proudest moment may have been managing the Gents team to 3rd place in McDonagh in 2000, losing out on the win by a single stroke.

His playing career was also very successful too, winning numerous prizes that eventually seen his handicap drop to 1 - a level very few players achieve.

Westmeath County board would like to offer its deepest sympathy at this sad time to his wife Kathleen, daughters Betty and Susan and sons Paul and Stephen. Joe was one of those rare gems that doesn't come around that often - he will be deeply missed by all. Rest in Peace dear friend!
