Westmeath Leagues 2009
The Westmeath Leagues concluded last night with Collinstown emerging as winners for the 3rd consecutive year. The Collinstown D team, consisting of Larry McGinn, Mick Buckley, Martin Carter, Brian Caffrey and Liam Buckley, performed with great consistancy throughout the five weeks, never finishing outside the top 3 any week.
Last night was no exception as they finished in third place on the night to secure the points needed to guarantee top spot in the table. A solid 49 and 50 in the doubles coupled with a 2 50's, a 52 and a 59 in the singles enusured that their 611.75 total was plenty good enough to take the title.
Team captain, Martin Carter, thanked the County Board for the prizes in his speech and expressed his delight in winning the title for a third year in a row. Martin and Larry McGinn had the proud achievement of being members of all 3 of those teams.
The home team last night was Custume and they needed to make up a gap of 2 points on the Collinstown B team if they were to overhaul them for the runners-up spot. Custume performed admirably on the night and won this round of the league and so waited tenditvely to see if it was enough. In the end it was as the Collinstown B team could only manage 4th spot on the night. So the Custume team of Damien Mullins, John Joyce, Pat Malone, Pat Stevens and Mick Foley finished runners-up overall for 2009. In third place then came the Collinstown B team which consisted of Paul Byrne, Peter Dolan, Paddy Conneely, Stuart Tarleton and Tom Davitt.
